The "__" was what the enumerator recorded in the census enumeration. This was most common among those of Chinese descent. In the 1870 Census for Alameda County, CA, it was observed that the Dwelling #s [Col 1 on the Census page] were not continuous as one reads from the first page on the film to the end. I am providing an index for researchers as to where these numbers are located. ======================================================================================================================= Stamped Page Member Dwelling Numbers Page Numbers Numbers* Township/City [PO location] Name(s) ======================================================================================================================= [In alameda folder] 1 to 156 1A to 10B 1 to 20 Alameda [PO: Alameda] alameda.txt 156 to 300 11A to 20A 20 to 39 Alameda [PO: Alameda] alameda1.txt [In brooklyn folder] 1 to 129 21A to 29B 1 to 18 Brooklyn [PO: Brooklyn] brooklyn.txt 129 to 267 30A to 38B 19 to 36 Brooklyn [PO: Brooklyn] brooklyn1.txt 268 to 383 39A to 47B 37 to 54 Brooklyn Township [PO: Brooklyn] brooklyntwp.txt 268 to 521 48A to 56A 55 to 71 Brooklyn Township [PO: Brooklyn] brooklyntwp1.txt [In eden folder] 1 to 7 57A 1 Eden Township [PO: Alvarado] edentwp1.txt 8 to 39 57B to 58A 2 to 5 Eden Township [PO: Mt. Haight, (1825-1878) the 10th Governor of California, who served as such from 1867 to 1871 was listed as living in (the City of) Alameda in Alameda County with his wife Anna E and 3 children that they had at that time. The Haight family is listed on Page 11B, Line 32 to 36 in Alameda. Of his achievements, He is credited with establishing the State Board of Health and the University of California, which had only been in the planning stages until his term of office. Below is a web address with more info on Gov. Haight URL: http://www.governor.ca.gov/govsgallery/t/biography/governor_text_10.html Notable families identified in the Census Transcription: 1. Francisco Peralta family. [Page 44B, lines 8-16, Brooklyn Township]. One of the families dating to pre-1850 California when it was part of Mexico. 2. William Hayward and wife Rachael [Page 81A, lines 23 & 24, Eden Township-PO:Haywards]. The City of Hayward got its name from William Hayward. Comments: The Hayward area was occupied by the Costanoan Indians for some 3,000 years before Guillermo Castro was granted 27,000 acres of flatlands, hills and canyons now known as Hayward & Castro Valley in 1843. In 1851, during the time of the California Gold Rush, William Hayward made his way to this area, squatting on land in Palomares Canyon. In 1852, at the invitation of Don Guillermo Castro, Hayward bought 40 acres of land spanning what is now downtown Hayward. He opened a general trading store which soon expanded into a stagecoach stop, a post office, a hosterlry and a dairy farm. Later, he and hiss second wife, Rachel, also established the "Hayward's Hotel, " one of the area's finest resorts. Many people referrred to the town as "Hayward's Place" or Hayward's" because of the famous Hayward Hotel. When the post office was established in 1860, the town was given the official name of "Haywood," due to a clerical error. In 1876, "Haywood" was incorporated as the "Town of Haywards," with a population of 1,100. In 1894, the "s" in "Haywards" was dropped and on Sept. 18, 1928, the name became "City of Hayward." For more information about the history of Hayward, one might contact the Hayward Area Historical Society & Museum at: haywdhist@aol.com The Museum, (510) 581-0223, is located at 22701 Main Street (at C Street) Hayward, 94541 Received from "Gail Lundholm" from the City of Hayward [through the City web site] 3.
