The mortality schedule was SUPPOSED to list those who died between June 1 1849 & May 31 1850, while the population schedule was to list those actually living in the residence on June 1 1850, no matter what day the enumerator actually took the information. Referring to the population schedule, already transcribed on this site, one can see that the enumeration process lasted through very late in the year. I suspect that either the enumerator was careless asking the question, or the informant didn't understand it, for when I compared the names & ages on the mortality schedule with those on the population schedule, there were a few overlaps. So although some one was alive on June 1 1850 but died in July or Aug 1850, they may be listed on the mortality schedule instead of, or even in addition to, the population schedule. Therefore, if the mortality schedule says someone died in July, it SHOULD mean July 1849, although it could have been July 1850. One thing that would help in deciding which is correct would be to pin down what year a cholera epidemic swept through the area; there were very many cholera deaths in July. I haven't been able to pin that down yet, although it should not be difficult. Notes about the transcription: There were a total of 6 pages in the Mortality Schedule, pages 55-60. However, pages 56, 58, & 59 were blank sheets. Hence only 3 pages contained data: 55, 57, & 60. The microfilm was filmed in the negative mode, IE, white printing on black background. When printing, this transcriber printed in reverse negative to obtain white-on-black, which greatly increased the legibility. However, there are places that are difficult to read. The last page in particular was in pretty bad shape. The camera seems to have jumped out of focus when filming that page. The entire right hand column of page 60 was illegible. I have done the best that I could with what I had to work with. My goal was to transcribe as written, and not to "correct" or "interpret" the data. If the enumerator mis-spelled a name, it is mis-spelled here. If the gender was wrong, it is wrong here. Abbreviated names remain abbreviated. This transcriber would like to stress that he is only human, and subject to making errors. So, if anyone has questions concerning the data, or suspects a typographical error, please refer to the original microfilm record for clarification. The films are available at NARA centers, FHC centers, and many larger public libraries. It is the sincere wish of this transcriber that this work will aid someone in their search of their family history. Happy Hunting!
