Witt Reference about Dec.,1840 TEXT FILE AND NOTES The 1840 Federal Census of Greene County, Illinois Please report transcription errors or direct comments / questions to Callie@anet-chi.com. All original errors remain in the census they cannot be corrected by me. In most cases, perhaps all, they are identified by notation. This transcript is thought to be accurate. However, Researchers should verify all data before acceptance. Due to the large number of enumerator corrections special care should be exercised by the reader. It appears that this Census was not accepted at the initial filing, and under went major correction by the Enumerator. This Census is a triad. The uncorrected original, The corrected original, and a latent accurate census of Greene County. The enumeration is sufficient to provide an accurate unofficial census 160 years after it's time. Pages are numbered sixty-nine (69) through one hundred and twenty-nine(129). * = Missing data, such as names, which cannot be reconstructed are represented by an asterisk. One asterisk signifies one unrecoverable alpha or numeric character. N / V = Two values separated by a slash ( / ) indicates a miscalculation in the original data. Where N is the new correct value, and V is the erroneous original value. The number N is calculated using the same set of original numbers used to obtain V X^Y=Two numbers separated by a caret ( ^ ) indicate changes made by the Enumerator in an effort to have his census certified. X changed to Y N / (X^Y) The attempted correction by the Enumeration is incorrect. N is the correct value X changed To Y, Y is still incorrect, correct value is N Numbers in parenthesis (1), (2) ... placed after the given name separates persons with identical names. Many (N) profiles are similar, no two exact. If you are willing to concede that a son can be born in the same year as the father, it makes the explanation easier. NOTES 1 Page 76, line 31- Enumerator failed to identify Head of Household. Profile resembles George Taylor- see 1830 census. 2 Page 93, line 15- Enumerator may have reversed given and surnames. It is likely Kessler John, is actually John Kessler 3 Page xxx, subtotal line - Enumerator skipped column, totals are one column left of proper placement 4 Page xxx, contains unresolved Enumerator errors and / or omissions.
