In my trip down the Missouri River in April 1870 last, and at Fort Buford I saw several men who had spent the winter among the Crow Indians, hunting buffalo for robes, and they informed me that there were no white men except occasional hunters who lived with the Indians and a few near the Crow Agency and any where on the Yellowstone or its tributaries streams. It was supposed there were quite a large number of white men, about 400 in the southern part of the county who wanted to explore the Big Horn and other streams for gold from Cheyenne on the UPRR in May and June last, and it was feared that they were destroyed by the Sioux Indians. Except with the Crows it is not safe for white men anywhere in the county. All with whom I conversed agree in representing the Valley of the Yellowstone and its tributaries as the most fertile imaginable the grass grows to the height of four to six feet and like all grass in Montana cures on the stock before the frost comes and retains the nutrients all winter, so that all game and domestic cattle in the winter as well as in the summer. Coal abounds the whole length of the Yellowstone. WF Wheeler US Marshal
