Marietta Township Transcribers Remarks:
=======================================

The 1800 Census for Marietta Township, Washington County, Northwest Territory 
consists of 173 names
in two side-by-side columns extending over six pages.  At the top of the first 
page is the following certification:

"The number of free male inhabitants of the age of twenty
one years within my Township of Marietta consists of 173 as appears
in a Schedule hereunto annexed.  Subscribed by me this first day
of June in the year of our Lord 1800.  Philip Greene Constable."

Beneath the "certification" is the following heading:

"Schedule of the number of free male inhabitants of twenty one years
of age within the Township allotted to me.  Philip Greene Constable"

At the top of the first column in the two-column set of names on the first page 
is the following heading:

"Names of heads of Families in which
is found a free male Inhabitant
of twenty one years of age."

At the top of the second column in the two-column set of names on the first page 
is the following heading:

"Names of free male Inhabitants of twenty
one years of age, including heads of fam-
ilies who are free males of the age of 
twenty one years."

At the bottom of each column on each page is a running subtotal of the names in 
that column to that point.

This was one of the two hardest townships to transcribe.  The ink was faint in 
many instances and Constable
Greene had a habit of leaving the tops of his "a"s and "o"s open, so in some 
cases it was hard to tell if the letter
was "a," "o," or "u."  There were three names which simply could not be 
deciphered, even after comparison with 
the other names on the 1800 Census and the 1803 Census for Marietta Township.
