Cambria, PA 1870 Federal Census - Notes The following notes relate to selected townships: East Conemaugh Coopersdale Croyle Franklin Borough Loretto Prospect Borough Richland Willmore EAST CONEMAUGH Borough, Post Office- Conemaugh The penmanship regarding East Conemaugh Boro was very hard to read. I would like to thank Sharon Trosan for helping Mary and me with the hard to read areas. In regards to the enumerator name on each page. There are a few times that it appears that Thomas Davis has an initial in front of his name. However, I feel it is his way of signing Thomas. In addition, at the end of the enumeration for East Conemaugh Boro on page 375B he certifies by signing his name Thomas Davis. Page 371A Line 38. The last name is barely readable. Olenon came from verification with the Census Index. Looking at the name it looks more like Olemn or Olemre. Page 371B Line 18. First name could be Keesy; occupation could be moler factory or woolen factory. Page 373A Line 36. The first name, Adam, has a huge ink splotch covering several of the letters. The name was verified correct with the 1870 Census Index. Page 373B Line 18. There is a mark that extends into the Father Foreign block. I did not show this block marked because the mark appears to be a portion of a check mark placed to the left of this block. I mention this so that each researcher can draw their own conclusion as to whether the Father Foreign block is or is not marked. Page 374A Line 12. First name hard to read; the age was overwritten, it could be 10/12 or 11/12; month born was hard to read, it could be Nov. Page 374A Lines 21-26. The last name is very hard to read it is one of those names that can be interpreted many different ways; there are two I decided to go with Wilson and Wilms. The name of John Wilson is listed in the Census index as being head of household on this page. The surname of Wilms came from my second opinion as to what the name could be; in addition, my proofreader feels strongly that it is Wilms. This is one area that the researcher should use their own interpretation of what they think. Page 374A Line 26. First name hard to read; at first glance it looks like either Elmer, Elener or Clmer. Page 374B Line 12. Last name and age is hard to read. The census index lists entire name as Christy, John* age 41. When comparing this with the census microfilm the last name could be Christy, or it could be something entirely different because the second, third and fourth letters are very hard to read and could be interpreted several different ways. As for John's age, at first glance it looks more like 211 or H1. Page 374B Line 16. Last name hard to read after the third letter. It could be Foshen, Foslem or something similar. The census index shows name spelled Foslim, David*. Page 374B Family numbers 58 and 59. I don't know what happened to them. The enumerator jumped from Dwelling#49 Family#57 on lines 20 and 21 to Dwelling #50 Family#60 on lines 22 thru 27. Page 374B lines 38-40 Last name in 1870 census index is listed as Walkenberg*. Page 375A lines 19 thru 40. Dwelling 57, Family 68 is a Rail Road House. This is indicated on the left side of the page by R. R. House. COOPERSDALE Borough, Post Office Coopersdale Dwelling and Family number 8 is omitted. Page 367B lines 10 and 11 The Dwelling/Family number jumps from Dwelling #7 Family #7 to Dwelling #9 Family #9. Page 368A Line 23 shows the name listed as last name Albert and first name Conrad However in Census Index there is a dual entry showing last name Conrad and first name Albert and also as last name Albert and first name Conrad. For transcribing I used last name Albert which makes last name for lines 24-26 also Albert but in remarks will add what the name could be. Lines 29-36. The last name has too many possibilities of what the enumerator intended it to be. The 1870 Western PA Census Index shows the name to be Lamond but I disagree with it because I can see a definite "i" in the enumerators last name for line 29. The first few letters are La?i?? or La??i??, as an example it could be Lami, Larni, or Larri with twice as many possibilities of the letters following the i. To keep from misleading other researchers on, I felt it best to leave each researcher to their own interpretation on the spelling of this name. Thomas Davis certified the correctness of Coopersdale Borough on page 370B. CROYLE Township text Page 263A and B. The enumerator, John Wilkin, on page 263A spelled the District as Croil Township. However on page 263B he picks up the correct spelling Croyle Township. Page 264B line 22 and 31 The enumerator has a mark in the block for cannot write (17). Then it possibly appears that he tried marking through this mark as though it was an error to begin with. However, the way the mark now appears it can be taken one of two ways, this block was intentionally marked in error. Page 269A lines 1 and 2. The enumerator did not have a family number written in for the previous entry on page 268B line 40. Page 269B line 3. The enumerator shows Aron with the family at dwelling number 110 family number 107. I feel this is an error in that line 3 should actually be the start of dwelling number 111 family number 108 instead of this starting on line 4 as shown. Page 270B line 8. The enumerator has two different birth places listed for William Haddin. The first location is Penna but appears to be scratched through and overwritten by the word England. And in front of England the letters are Irel. Page 271B line 7 The enumerator shows the individual with dwelling number 140 family 136. I feel this is an error and he should be with dwelling number 141, family number 137 instead. Page 272B line 16 This is the start of new family and dwelling. I feel this is an error in that line 16 belongs with previous family and dwelling and that the new family and dwelling number should begin on line 17. FRANKLIN Borough, Johnstown Post Office, Cambria County, PA The enumerator, Geo Engelbach, shows the month of enumeration on Written Page 1 as July, while on all other pages he shows the month as August. The majority of the birth months appear to be calculated to August instead of June. Page 177 Lines 11 thru 13. Enumerator spelled birthplace Scottland. I corrected to read Scotland. LORETTO Borough, Post Office Munster The enumerator checked Can't Read; Can't Write boxes on the majority of the pages for those indivuals in school and several occupations that you would expect had the capability of reading and writing. I recorded these areas as they were on the census although I do question the correctness. Page 31A Line 1 The enumerator had a double entry. I distinguished between the two by adding 1A and 1B to the census. On the top of each page for enumerator name he used Wm Glass. He changed this at the end where he certified his enumeration was correct by signing his name William Glass. PROSPECT BOROUGH, Post Office: Johnstown Page 403A The Enumerator spelled the division as Prospeckt Borough. I corrected the spelling to Prospect Borough. Page 409B, Line 17, Enumerator wrote 99 for Dwelling and the rest of the spaces are blank. Page 410A The enumerator made his certification to correctness " I certify that the foregoing Enumeration was made in accordance with the tenor of my Oath of Office. Geo Engelbach." RICHLAND Township Page 310A lines 37 to 40. Last name is hard to read. I used "Elenberger" from the census index and a better spelling of the name on line 1 page 310B. Page 311A. Dwelling numbers and/or Family numbers are overwritten from lines 7 through 38 making it hard to determine which is the correct number. Page 312B line 25A. A mark for mother foreign birth but looks more like a stray mark, in transcription I left it blank. Page 314A Lines 2-6. The last name looking at the census appears to be spelled Hostitler; however if you check on FTM Western PA Census index the last name is spelled Hostitier. Lines 16 and 17. The "a" in the last name appears on the census to be a "u" however checking several indexes, Marriage and census, the last name is spelled Varner. For this reason, I transcribed it as Varner. Page 315A Line 5. This enumerator usually lists last name followed by first name. For some reason he reversed it on this entry by putting the name as Johnathan Helsil. Helsil is the last name, I corrected this on my transcription entry. WILLMORE Township Page 332A Line 39 The enumerator put M for sex but should be F. Line 40 Dwelling #42 no entry. Page 332B Lines 14 and 15 The last name is barely readable; the first letter could be a T or H, all the vowels are faded and the m could be n. In the census index the surname Thomson is listed as questionable also but since it was the name shown as located on that page I decided to leave the name Thomson *. Line 35 An ink splotch is covering the last half of the initial making it unreadable. The initial appears to be an H or K.
