Salisbury Borough, Post Office- Elk Lick, Somerset Co, PA 1870 text notes ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The enumerator, Michael F. Smith, used the letters HK for occupation on the females, I feel certain the "HK" means house keeper or house keeping however since he used the letters I transcribed it the way he wrote it. I'm also surprised that the enumerator doesn't show the children within school age of attending school for the year throughout the census. Page 304A Lines 9 through 16. The second letter in the surname is hard to read, it could either be h or k. The surname is either Okley or Ohley. The Census Index for 1870 shows the last name listed as Okley. Page 304B Lines 10 through 18. The fourth letter in last name is hard to read; it could be a "u" making the name Foruer or a "n" making the name Forner. Page 305A Lines 23 through 29. There is an ink splotch covering the first part of the last name making it unreadable. The first letter could be "B, D, O or something similar", the next letter is completely covered, then there is either a "p or f", then again the next one or two letters are completely covered, with the last four letters of the name hler. In the census index the name is shown as ??fahler. Line 23 the first name is Matthew or Matthewt. There is either a letter or sign immediately following the first name Matthew, + (plus) or the letter "t". Lines 26 and 29. The enumerator has the block marked for deaf, blind or dumb but doesn't specify which it is. I am wondering if this wasn't checked in error or possibly stray marks. Page 306B Line 8. The last name, first name, and age were written over making it almost unreadable. Several of the letters and numbers could be different than what I transcribed it as since I took my best guess at what it could be. For example, in the last name- the first letter could be a "D" or "B". The first name I feel is Alice. The age would be a complete guess on my part. Page 306B Line 9 was overwritten but was readable enough to verify last name, first name and age with the Census Index. Page 306B Line 10. First name hard to read, age could be 24, or 34. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Salisbury Borough was transcribed by April Phillips and proofread by Mary Bookout for the USGenWeb Census Project, http://www.usgenweb.org/census. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
