The first district enumerated was St. Lukes Parish. The enumerator of this district was Assistant Marshal Robert S. Jones, a resident of Southampton County and local school teacher. The second district enumerated was Nottaway Parish. The enumerator of this district was Assistant Marshal Shugars Lain, a resident of and farmer in Southampton County. The enumeration of St. Lukes Parish begins on page 242a and ends on page 283b. When numbering the families and dwellings of St. Lukes Parish the enumerator used numbers 1 through 750. On page 283a of this census the following totals have been written by someone other than the enumerator: White males 1195 Colored males 442 White females 1313 Colored females 489 ==== ==== Totals 2508 Total 931 Dwellings 750 Male slaves 1741 Families 750 Female slaves 1525 ==== Deaths 124 Total 3266 Farms 313 Professional Establishments 6 umber of pages 143 Marriages 78 January 6th 1851 P.E.W. On page 283b the enumerator has written the following statement: 82 pages Free Population enumerated by me in St. Lukes Parish making 3439 Free Inhabitants Southampton County. Robert S. Jones Asst. Marshal On this same page the enumerator has penned several drawings of trees with an owl sitting on a branch. I describe this because it is not possible to include the drawings with the transcription at this time. It is my belief that a descendant of Mr. Jones would perhaps be interested in the drawings as they are undoubtedly an insight to his unique personality. The enumeration of Nottaway Parish begins on page 284a and ends on page 335b. When numbering the families and dwellings of Nottaway Parish the enumerator used numbers 1 through 822. On page 335b the enumerator has written the following statement: 103 Pages Free population in Nottaway Parish enumerated by me, making 4328 free inhabitants - Southampton County. Shugars Lain Asst. Marshal On page 335b someone other than the enumerator has listed totals concerning Nottaway Parish. It is not possible to transcribe these totals as they are mostly illegible. The totals are certified as follows: 2nd Examination 4 March 1851 J. W. Har**en After the census was taken the pages were bound into books with two pages facing each other. A page number was then assigned and stamped into the upper right corner and the facing page received no number. These pages are now known as A and B pages (ex. 242a and 242b). When the census documents were transferred onto microfilm for the government archives the photographers wrote numbers on each page. This census contains numbers 483 through 670. These numbers are not always in order. Some numbers are not legible. This transcription has both numbers listed whenever possible to aid in genealogy research.
