| In 1880 the state of California was divided for enumeration purposes by the Census Bureau into four Supervisory Districts. SD 1 consisted of the San Francisco and Marin Peninsulas, SD 2 of counties in central California, SD 3 of northern California, and SD 4 of southern California.
