With roughly 3300 counties in the United States, one person can't possibly be expected to keep track of all those volunteers —or keep them happy and informed. We have, therefore, separated the project areas into states, with one person coordinating each state.

Following is the basic list of State Coordinator duties.

  1. Recruit Volunteers
  2. Send out welcome letter to new volunteers [Contact Maggie for the password.]
  3. Be familiar with CART, CenTrans, and the templates & spreadsheets available
  4. Make sure volunteers transcribe according to rules/standards
  5. Ask volunteers for first 100 entries of transcription so they can check, to avoid volunteer having to redo
  6. Submit page updates to census pages webmaster at us1880census@hotmail.com, including links to completed transcriptions, and volunteers assigned [Note an alternate is to use the State Coordinator Update Form]
  7. Maintain e-mail database of volunteers
  8. Explain to volunteers where they can get materials needed for transcription.
  9. Be Familiar With the Help Pages.
